Overview
Acne is a skin condition that is common during adolescence, affecting 80% or more of teenagers. Although less common in adults, nearly 50% of people in their twenties and thirties continue to battle this condition. Young or old, people who suffer with acne are often self-conscious about their skin and find it both stressful and socially inhibiting. Acne may be attributed to genetics or hormonal imbalance. Contributing factors, or acne triggers, include lifestyle choices – diet, sleep pattern, hygiene, and stress. Treatment is important in order to improve the appearance and reduce the frequency and severity of breakouts and may also help to prevent/minimize scarring and/or PIH (postinflammatory hyperpigmentation).
Treatment may include:
- Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid
- Tretinoin
- Oral antibiotics, topical antibiotics
- Laser or light therapy
- Vitamins and supplements
- Sun Protection
